Each class is taught by an experienced instructor (sometimes with the help of an assistant, depending on class size) so you and your dog will get the individual attention you want and need.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kcfadogs.org\/?page_id=31\">Click here for class dates, times and registration information<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Puppy Kindergarten<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1305\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kcfadogs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Pile-of-PWD-puppies-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.kcfadogs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Pile-of-PWD-puppies-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.kcfadogs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Pile-of-PWD-puppies-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.kcfadogs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Pile-of-PWD-puppies-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.kcfadogs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Pile-of-PWD-puppies.jpg 1044w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This class is for puppies 2 to 5 months (8 to 20 weeks) of age.\u00a0 Activities focus on socialization with puppies and people, building a foundation for successful basic obedience training.\u00a0 Classes will include confidence-building exercises, social interaction, and the opportunity to learn and practice responses to basic commands.\u00a0 A different discussion topic will be introduced each week and will include a question-and-answer time.\u00a0 Puppies between 5 and 6 months may attend this class with instructor approval, or may be recommended for our Basic Skills\/Everyday Manners class.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Virtual Puppies 101<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This virtual class is appropriate for puppies from 8 to 24 weeks of age and includeS instruction on puppy nutrition, health, grooming, house-training, and safety. \u00a0Real-time demonstrations and individual feedback will help students teach their puppies basic commands using principles of positive reinforcement.\u00a0 Each 45-minute class will also include a question-and-answer session.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kcfadogs.org\/?page_id=287\">Why should my puppy\u00a0go to kindergarten?<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Though the COVID-19 pandemic makes it difficult to expose your puppy to many social situations, you can still work on socializing your puppy at home.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s an article from the Daily Jefferson County Union where we present specific ways you can work with your puppy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kcfadogs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Puppy-Training-Daily-Union-article-04-16-2020.pdf\">Puppy Training Daily Union article 04-16-2020<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>KCFA&#8217;s Puppy K Instructors and Training Committee worked together to provide these articles to further help you train your puppy:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kcfadogs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Puppy-Training-The-Human-End-of-the-Leash-7.18.20.pdf\">Puppy Training &#8211; FAQs<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We hope you find these resources helpful!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Basic Skills\u00a0and Everyday Manners<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This class focuses on establishing a working relationship and rapport between dog and owner, laying the groundwork for future training.\u00a0 Students will learn how to incorporate basic training into everyday life in a fun, positive way.\u00a0 Skills covered will include:\u00a0 loose leash walking, polite greetings, sit, down, stay, and come.\u00a0 Common behavior issues will be addressed.\u00a0 This class may be repeated. \u00a0Class size is limited and preregistration is required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Virtual Basic Skills and Everyday Manners<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Content will mirror that of KCFA\u2019s in-person class, covering Sit, Down, and Come, along with Loose Leash Walking, Stay, Leave It, and Polite Greeting.\u00a0 This class is appropriate for dogs more than 24 weeks old.\u00a0 The virtual format allows handlers and their dogs to learn in the familiarity and security of their own homes, using a mostly leash-free and hands-off approach to teach handlers how to teach their dogs to work for reinforcement.\u00a0 Students will have the opportunity to practice the skills demonstrated and to receive coaching on individual issues during each 60-minute class meeting.\u00a0 Concepts and skills covered each week will be supplemented with selected materials and links to web-based resources provided by email.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Continuing Basic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This class offers the opportunity for dog-and-handler teams to continue improving their basic skills for solid, reliable responses.\u00a0 More advanced skills will be introduced, with a goal of meeting the requirements for AKC Beginner Novice competition and\/or to prepare for Intermediate level training.\u00a0 This class may be repeated.\u00a0 Class size is limited and preregistration is required.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Calmer Canine<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>For dogs with &#8220;big feelings&#8221; and the people who love them!\u00a0 Created especially for dogs that struggle to stay calm around distractions, this class utilizes focus games to strengthen the connection between dogs and their handlers so that both are better equipped to handle stressful situations.\u00a0 This class is limited to four participants, each working within their own space, to create a learning environment where teams can grow more comfortable, confident, and connected.\u00a0 Preregistration is required.\u00a0 The instructor will contact each applicant before the session begins to learn more about their dog&#8217;s challenges.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Intermediate Skills<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This class is for students who want to strengthen the bond with their dog through positive training or who are considering competition.\u00a0 This class will focus on fine tuning handler skills to achieve reliable responses.\u00a0 Off-leash work and low jumps may be introduced.\u00a0 Dogs in this class must be able to work reliably in a group situation.\u00a0 Successful completion of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kcfadogs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/SkillsToAdvance.pdf\">Basic Skills Criteria<\/a><\/span>\u00a0or Instructor approval required.\u00a0 This class may be repeated. \u00a0Class size is limited and preregistration is required.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Advanced Skills<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This class is for students who are training for competition in either traditional obedience or rally, or who wish to continue higher level training.\u00a0 Exercises will focus on refining competition skills, both on and off leash.\u00a0 Emphasis will be placed on precision in handler body language and footwork, and on the dog\u2019s focus, attention, and reliable responses to commands.\u00a0 Opportunities will be provided to practice specific competition exercises which may vary depending on the makeup of the class.\u00a0 Instructor approval required.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Junior Handling<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Open to children of KCFA members only; for children ages 4-10 years.\u00a0 Dogs must be under reasonable control of the child and must be safe in a group setting.\u00a0 Parent or guardian must be present for each class.\u00a0\u00a0<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Rally<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This class is for students who want to learn the fun sport of Rally \u00a0as well as those who want to improve their skills for competition.\u00a0 The class will introduce the team concept of Rally and will use\u00a0AKC exercises, signs and rules.\u00a0 Each class meeting will feature a core obedience skill and will review Rally exercises which focus on that skill. The skills and exercises reviewed over the course of the 7-week class session will become progressively more challenging.\u00a0 By the end of the session, students interested in competition should be ready to prepare for trials. \u00a0Rally is offered outdoors during the late spring to early summer.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Dogs About Town\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This class is open to Intermediate\/Advanced handler-dog teams who either\u00a0wish to continue with higher level training or who are\u00a0training for competition in either traditional obedience or rally.\u00a0 Exercises will focus on refining competition skills, both on and off leash, as well as team obedience.\u00a0 Emphasis will be placed on precision in handler body language and footwork, and on the dog\u2019s focus, attention, and reliable responses to commands.\u00a0 Opportunities will be provided to practice specific competition exercises which may vary depending on the makeup of the class.<\/p>\n<p>The locations, dates, and times will vary in order to provide the teams with varied environments in which to work on their obedience skills.\u00a0 Handlers should dress appropriately for weather and outdoor conditions.\u00a0 Instructor approval required.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The KCFA offers a variety of fun and interactive classes.
