Course Descriptions

The KCFA offers a number of training sessions for the community.

  • Puppy Kindergarten is a popular activity for families and individuals with young dogs.
  • Classes are also available in a number of obedience areas. Class participants may focus on the fundamentals of obedience or they may choose to prepare for one of the many competitions available.
  • For those who wish to show their dogs competitively, conformation classes may be arranged.

Puppy Kindergarten / Puppy Socialization

Who:

  • for puppies at least 8 weeks old

Focus:

  • socialization
  • basic obedience and life skills introduction
  • confidence building exercises
  • interactions with other puppies
  • reliable response to basic commands
  • strengthening the pet-owner bond
  • dog ownership and puppy training issues
  • AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program testing available

Basic Obedience / Everyday Manners

Who:

  • for the owner who wants a well-behaved, socialized dog

Focus:

  • expand knowledge of basic commands
  • practical application for basic commands
  • incorporating basic training into everyday life

Option:

  • begin exercises focusing on control and attention, in preparation for more advanced training

Repeat:

  • may be repeated
  • successful completion required before moving up to the next training level

Intermediate Obedience and/or Rally

Who:

  • for the owner who wants to fine tune basic skills and put some variety and fun into obedience training

Focus:

  • details of obedience performance

Option:

  • introduction to jumps and dumbbell training

Prereqs:

  • dogs must have completed Basic training
  • dogs must be reliably under control
  • dogs must know basic obedience routines

Repeat:

  • may be repeated

Note:

  • upon successful completion of this class, students should be ready to enter match shows, AKC Obedience, or Rally Obedience trials

Advanced Obedience / Competitive Obedience

Who:

  • limited to students actively working towards an intermediate or advanced title

Focus:

  • jumps and retrieves
  • off-leash
  • scent discrimination and more, are some areas of advanced title skill requirements

Repeat:

  • may be repeated

Note:

  • content will be adjusted to fit the needs

Show Training / Conformation Exhibition

Available By Request

Who:

  • dogs at least 4 months old
  • open to novice and advanced handlers

Focus:

  • preparation for AKC breed competition

Repeat:

  • may be repeated

Note:

  • minimum of 3 participants
  • maximum of 12 dogs
  • students not registered for this class may participate on a per-diem basis with the permission of the instructor

Therapy Dog Certification

Available By Request

Who:

  • anyone interested in doing therapy activities with their dog

Focus:

  • dog evaluation for temperament
  • evaluation through observation during therapy activities by a certified evaluator

Note:

  • successful completion of evaluation will result in certification required for therapy activities
